Hyundai Creta vs Ford Ecosport vs Renault Duster: Which compact SUV you should go for!

With the launch of Hyundai Creta, the options for consumers in compact SUV segment have widened. The segment is currently dominated by Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. The two cars were launched in 2012 and 2013 respectively and have been a success story for their respective companies since then. Mahindra did try to jump in the segment with Quanto, but the mid-sized SUV failed to catch eyeballs. Now then Hyundai, one of the leading car brands in India, has come up with a new vehicle- Creta and is hoping to give rivals EcoSport and Duster a run for the money. Also Read- Hyundai receives over 10,000 pre-bookings for Creta.

If you are looking to buy a compact SUV, then you have landed on the right page. Here we try to narrow down on these cars by comparing their engine specifications, price, and style- the three most features a consumer looks for while going to buy a car-

Under the hood

All the three cars are available in both petrol and diesel variants.

Hyundai Creta comes with three engine options – 1.4-litre U2 CRDi, 1.6-litre CRDi diesel and 1.6-litre Dual VTVT petrol. The 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel engine churns out total power output of 90bhp and maximum torque of 224Nm, the 1.6-litre CRDi diesel engine gives a power output of 128bhp and total torque of 265Nm while the petrol variant 1.6-litre Dual VTVT petrol engine has total power output of 123bhp and 154Nm of maximum torque on offer.

Ford EcoSport comes with a 1.5-litre petrol unit, 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and 1.5-litre diesel engine. The 1.5-litre petrol engine gives out a total power output of 112 PS and a total torque of 140Nm. The 1.0-litre has a full power of 125 PS and 170Nm of total torque. The 1.5-litre diesel engine can produce a total power of 91 PS and 204Nm of total torque.

Renault Duster has 1.6-litre petrol engine that churns out a total power output of 104 PS and a maximum torque of 145 Nm. Besides, it comes with two diesel options as well, both with a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The one of the two diesel engines gives a total power of 85 PS and maximum torque of 200Nm while the other produces a power output of 110 PS and 245 Nm of maximum torque.

Money matters

Upon comparing the ex-showroom price in Delhi Hyundai Creta’s base model, is priced higher than its rivals. The new Hyundai Creta is priced at Rs 8.59 lakh while Renault Duster is slightly cheaper and comes with a price of Rs 8.30 lakh. Ford EcoSport is the cheapest of all and has a price tag of Rs 6.75 lakh. A look at fuel efficiency EcoSport is a winner here, having a fuel economy of 15.80kmpl. Creta claims a mileage of 15.29 kmpl while Duster lags behind with 13.06kmpl.

The style

Creta, EcoSport and Duster score well on design and all have capabilities to grab eyeballs with their sporty look. All three vehicles have muscular shape and have an attractive SUV-like stance. Renault Duster has had a facelift recently, and Ford EcoSport will be available in the new avatar soon as well, but it is Hyundai Creta which walks away with honours as far as overall design is concerned.

The bottom line

If you are looking for an all new style, then Hyundai Creta should be your choice. But if fuel efficiency is your priority then go for Ford EcoSport, and if you can wait EcoSport’s facelift, which made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this year, is around the corner. With the arrival of Creta, Renault’s Duster may see a decline in sales.

Hyundai Creta (ix25) vs Renault Duster vs Ford Ecosport vs Maruti S-Cross

The competition in the small SUV segment will get more intense come July with the launch of Hyundai‘s highly-anticipated Creta SUV. Aimed at the Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport, the Creta will be Hyundai’s first offering in the sub-10 lakh SUV space currently dominated by the cars mentioned above. And it Creta also has to contend with Maruti’s S-Cross. First impressions suggest the Creta or, as it is known internationally the ix25, will get typical Hyundai traits like good looks and a feature-rich, high-quality cabin. The Hyundai Creta will be launching in July this year which leads us to the all-important question- Is it better than the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and Maruti S-Cross? Find out here in the Hyundai Creta vs Renault Duster vs Ford Ecosport vs Maruti S-Cross comparison story.

Design

The cars in this segment are generally good looking and have been well received by the Indian audience. The Hyundai Creta is no different. Based on Hyundai’s Fluidic Design 2.0 language, the Creta gets enough muscle and style which make it a very attractive proposition. There are sharp headlamps up front flanking the large hexagonal grille which is very Santa Fe-like. Higher level trims are likely to get projector units and LED daytime running lights which will lend the front a very premium look. The side is characterised by a rising shoulder line and a thick C-Pillar giving the car a very aggressive stance. At the back, Hyundai has kept things simple with neat, rectangular tail lamps. The design works very well overall and should please most Indian car buyers.

[box type=”shadow” ]Also See- Hyundai Creta vs Maruti S-Cross[/box]

The Renault Duster and Ford Ecosport have been around for quite some time now and their popularity suggests the design is generally well accepted and liked by most. The Ford has a slightly oversized front grille though and the small tires on a car with a tall stance spoil the look a little. The Renault Duster is much better in terms of design with muscular wheel arched and a wide stance. The only real problem these two will face once the Hyundai Creta is officially launched will be the fact that that will be a much fresher face and will appeal a little more to car buyers, at least, initially. The Maruti S-Cross is a totally different vehicle in terms of design with its hatchback crossover looks. The S-Cross looks smart overall with a neat design, especially the rear. However, the headlamps are a tad too big and most Indian buyers will place it in the Hyundai i20 Active’s segment rather than the small SUV category which could hurt sales.

[box type=”shadow” ]Also See – Hyundai Creta SUV Pre-Launch Report[/box]

Based on the sketches released by Hyundai and the model sold internationally, the interiors of the Creta will boast of very impressive levels of quality and equipment, typical of Hyundais these days. The dashboard is nice and flowing and could come in a black and beige combo with silver accents. Top of the line variants are expected to feature a touchscreen infotainment system as well, although that might not be the case considering the Elite i20 does not get one.

[box type=”shadow” ]Also See – Hyundai Creta vs Rivals: Duster, EcoSport, Scorpio, S-Cross[/box]

Space will be at par with the competition so do not expect massive legroom and a third row of seats. As far as the competition is concerned, while the Ford EcoSport is good in terms of interior quality in design, the Renault Duster feels like a budget car with low-rent interiors. Although the manufacturer has made improvements and it now comes with steering mounted controls and a touchscreen infotainment system, it still feels a notch below the rest. The S-Cross’ interiors feel very premium and upmarket. The all-black colour scheme looks classy and the simple design makes the interiors very appealing. The Ford EcoSport could very well turn out to be the smallest of the lot with the least amount of interior space.

Hyundai Creta

[box type=”success” ]Hyundai Creta has the upper hand thanks to smart styling and fresh face. Customers are likely to find it more attractive than the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and Maruti S-Cross.[/box]

Features

On paper, all cars are almost equally matched with all the basics one would expect from a car belonging to this segment. But there are still a few features that are present in one and not the other. The Maruti S-Cross, Renault Duster and the Hyundai Creta feature a touchscreen infotainment system with in-built GPS navigation. But the Duster misses out on other features such as push button start and keyless entry, both of which are available on the Ford Ecosport, Maruti S-Cross and the Creta as well. In terms of safety equipment, all cars feature dual front airbags and ABS, but the top of line Ecosport and Hyundai Creta get 6 airbags for occupants. One of the biggest omissions on the Duster’s equipment list, the Automatic Climate Control, is featured on the other two, the S-Cross getting a dual-zone climate control. Additionally, the Hyundai Creta and Maruti S-Cross also come with projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights.

Specification

The upcoming Creta compact SUV is underpinned by the same platform as the new i20. The Creta will get the same 1.6-litre Dual VTVT petrol and U2 1.4 CRDi and 1.6 U2 CRDI VGT engines that power the Verna. The Creta also gets 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. While the Creta gets a 4wd option in various international markets, the same will NOT be offered to Indian customers.

While all three cars are available with the petrol engine option, the EcoSport is miles ahead with the brilliant 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine. There is also a 1.5-litre unit mated to a 6-speed dual clutch automatic. The Duster is majorly sold in the diesel variant with barely any demand for the petrol and it does not get an optional automatic transmission either. However, it is the only car here to come with an optional AWD system. The Maruti S-Cross gets only two diesel engine options and no petrol. A 1.6-litre diesel which produces 120 PS power and 320 Nm torque and a 1.3 litre diesel which produces 90 PS and 200 Nm torque. While the 1.6 L is mated to a 6-speed manual, the latter only gets a 5-speed manual. The Renault Duster is the only SUV which gets an AWD option.

Ford EcoSport gets three engine options; Two petrol and one Diesel

[box type=”success” ]The Ford EcoSport with its optional EcoBoost engine and 6-speed dual clutch automatic offers the most number of options. The Creta is the only SUV which features a diesel automatic. The Duster is the only SUV which gets an AWD option.[/box]

Price

The Ford EcoSport is the cheapest car in its class. The pricing of the Creta is in the range of INR 8.59-13.57 lakhs (ex-showroom) while the Ford EcoSport can be had for anything in the range of INR 6.75-10.20 lakhs (ex-showroom). The prices of the Maruti S-Cross will be announced shortly, but it is expected to cost anywhere between INR 8 to 10 lakhs. The Renault Duster is is similar in terms of price to the Hyundai Creta with a price range of INR 8.3-13.55 lakhs. (ex-showroom). Having said that, it will also be the largest SUV among the three.

Competitive pricing for the Hyundai Creta is expected

[box type=”success” ]Despite being the cheapest, the Ford EcoSport will also be the smallest. The Hyundai Creta is a tad too expensive especially the higher spec diesel trims. Final word only when the S-Cross’ prices are announced[/box]

Verdict

Initial impressions suggest the car would be very impressive in all departments and could turn out to be the pick of the lot among the four. As for the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster, it boils down to specific requirements and budgets. The former is more of a hatchback on stilts rather than an SUV while the latter is more of an SUV and significantly bigger. The Duster also has the best ride and handling of the lot and Hyundai will find it hard to match. Some might complain about the lack of features and premium feel, something the Ford EcoSport does not suffer from and does not plague the Hyundai Creta either. The Maruti S-Cross is a slightly different product than these three. Although all of these vehicles are crossovers, the S-Cross looks more of a hatchback which could keep buyers looking for SUVs away.

[box type=”success” ]Final judgement rests on the official announcement of prices of the Maruti S-Cross, but it sure looks like Hyundai’s got another winner on its hands good enough to beat the Maruti S-Cross, Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster.[/box]

Another winner from Hyundai?

Face Off: Hyundai Creta vs Ford EcoSport

The compact SUV segment has seen phenomenal growth over the past two years. With huge profits raked in by the Duster and EcoSport for its respective car makers, other manufacturers are slowly jumping the bandwagon. Hyundai’s entry into the compact SUV segment of the Indian market will be the Creta.

Although Hyundai is yet to launch the Creta, the South Korean car maker’s SUV has already been on sale in many parts of the world for quite sometime now. We take a look at what the Hyundai Creta has to offer against the Ford EcoSport, one of the most popular cars of the segment.

Design:

Hyundai Creta:

The Hyundai Creta borrows heavily from its bigger brother, the Santa Fe. The South Korean SUV’s aerodynamic profile, aggressive headlight design and 17 inch diamond cut alloys all add to its upmarket feel. Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy has done wonders to its SUVs. While past models were awkward and ungainly in size and posture, its new off-roaders including the Creta are far more appealing.

The Hyundai Creta’s top end variant comes with diamond cut alloys

Ford EcoSport:

While many consider the EocSport to be quite a formidable SUV, its rather stubby wheels, short, fat stature do not add to the American SUV’s aesthetic appeal. The EcoSport SUV’s exterior may be striking, however, it is in no way the prettiest car in its segment.

The Ford EcoSport

Winner: Hyundai Creta

Interior:

Hyundai Creta:

Hyundai’s strictly adheres to its Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy. The Creta’s cabin is based off the same design language and once again borrows heavily from its elder sibling. The second iteration of the car maker’s design language brings order to the mix. Although the Creta’s interior is a stunning mix of sharp cuts and curves, it also emanates an aura of structure that provides restraint and a bit of sophistication. The inclusion of a media-nav system and a touchscreen display makes the Creta one of the best equipped cars in this segment.

Official sketches of the upcoming Creta SUV

Ford EcoSport:

Ford’s strategy with the EocSport was to provide the most pocket friendly SUV out there. As a result, compromises had to be made. Although Ford’s infotainment system packs some impressive features, the small monochrome display and the rather difficult to reach button layout is quite inconvenient for the driver to control the settings. The sub 4m requirement has also resulted in a small cabin.

Dashboard of the Ford EcoSport

Winner: Hyundai Creta

Engine:

Hyundai Creta:

The Hyundai Creta will be offered with three engines. Petrol variants of the Creta will be powered by a 1.6 l four cylinder engine that churns out 122 hp. The SUV’s diesel engine lineup include a 1.4 l and a more powerful 1.6 l engine. The 1.4 l oil burner produces 89 hp while the 1.6 l diesel mill puts out an impressive 127 hp. The 1.6 l diesel variant will be offered with both manual and automatic while the other two engines are offered in manual format only.

The Creta will be offered in manual and automatic formats

Ford EcoSport:

One of the biggest selling points of the EcoSport was its 1.0 l EcoBoost petrol engine. Producing an impressive 123 hp @ 6000 RPM and 170 Nm of torque at 1400 RPM, the 1.0 l EcoBoost engine is one of Ford’s most technologically advanced engines it has ever created. Ford also offers the EcoSport with a 1.5 l petrol and 1.5 l TDCi diesel mill. The 1.5 l Ti-VCT petrol mill churns out 109 bhp @ 6300 RPM and a peak torque of 140 Nm @ 4400 RPM while its diesel equivalent produces 89 bhp @ 3750 RPM and 204 Nm of torque @ 2000 RPM.

Although the EcoSport May Be Marketed As A Capable Off Roader, the compact crossover lacks an AWD option

Winner: Draw

Verdict:

Although the Ford EcoSport was touted to be a game changer back in 2013, the lack of supply to meet the immense demand dealt a huge blow to the car’s sales figures. Despite the manufacturer did putting its Chennai plant into full swing to make up for lost time, the damage had already been done.

With the Creta, Hyundai ups the ante once more. Hopefully the South Korean car maker will not make the same mistakes its American rival committed and will prepare its manufacturing and assembly plants well in advance for the onslaught of bookings.
